Last month the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire joined millions of people across the UK to get active together for better mental health.
Run in partnership with the leading mental health charity, Mind, RED January is a month-long community initiative. RED (run every day) encourages members of the public to get active, running, splashing, pedalling and jumping every day to 'beat the blues away'.
Last year 1 in 4 people in the UK experienced a mental health problem. This staggering figure equates to 194,415 people in Herefordshire and Worcestershire alone. Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire wanted to join the campaign to practice what we preach, making 194,415m per team our goal.
Splitting into four teams - children and young people, adult participation, workforce and insight, and business development - we took on the challenge across the entire organisation. In total, this January we covered a staggering 1,085,500m, smashing our initial target!
83% of staff felt a physical improvement as a direct result of participating in the RED January campaign, and felt that RED January had helped to boost their activity levels. 67% of respondents also felt better mentally as a result of participating in the campaign.
