We are proud supporters of Loneliness Awareness Week

Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire is proud to support Loneliness Awareness Week, running from 15-19th June 2020.

Loneliness Awareness Week is a campaign developed by The Marmalade Trust in a bid to raise awareness of loneliness and encourage people to speak about it openly. We all feel lonely at times – it's a normal human emotion. We're biologically wired for social contact, and loneliness is our signal that we need more.

Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire is committed to reducing loneliness and social isolation across the two counties. We will work with organisations and communities to bring people together through sport and physical activity opportunities, supporting them to develop meaningful relationships.

Our new 'Our Community Can' programme, run in partnership with ignite cic and funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, aims to support people across Herefordshire and Worcestershire, particularly those living in rural communities, to be active and creative. Working closely with community groups often in rural areas, the project is based on community ideas and aspirations for doorstep activity, where local people can take ownership, develop and enhance their skills and play a vital role in bringing their community together.

Stephen Brewster, Chief Executive Officer of Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire said, "We know that individuals living in rural areas can experience greater social isolation and loneliness which can have a significant impact on their physical and mental health."

"For those who may feel socially isolated, access to suitable physical and creative activities can be difficult. 'Our Community Can' is our way of bringing active opportunities to their doorstep, helping to overcome barriers to physical activity and reap the benefits that being active can bring."

If social isolation and/or loneliness is a problem within your community or you feel your community could benefit from sustainable physical activity and/or creative opportunities, please get in touch with Laura or complete the online 'expression of interest' form.
