Stourport Hockey Club has been awarded a Licence to Host the first West Midlands Talent Academy

Stourport Hockey Club has been awarded a licence from England Hockey to host one of 17 initial Talent Academies in England which will commence in September 2022, to run for three years.

Following a comprehensive application process the Club, based at the Kingsway Stourport, will host training sessions where we will provide top quality coaching to selected 15-18 year olds from across the West Midlands; 26 athletes per gender will be carefully selected to identify potential and then to develop players to progress to National Age Group Squads.

Young players who come to train at our base, as part of the Academy, can continue to play for their local clubs with the added opportunity to be part of a squad meeting on a weekly basis, to receive high quality coaching and training through a combination of dedicated sessions and integration with other activities. We will be working in close collaboration with clubs and other organisations in the region to ensure that athletes are in the right environment, according to England Hockey's "Right Athlete, Right Environment "(RARE) principle. Our aim is to grow the athletes' sporting abilities with quality coaching time, offer opportunities to be challenged, plus improve player management and individual development plans.

England Hockey see this as an exciting way forward to nurture and develop exceptional potential in hockey players. The purpose of creating this Talent System is to offer a greater breadth and depth in the national talent pool, to deliver excellent hockey to a more diverse group of youngsters with focused coaching within a greater accessible regional reach for 15- 18 year olds, who demonstrate high potential in hockey.

England Hockey add "The new talent system puts clubs at the heart of talent delivery, creating more frequent, high-quality opportunities for young players. It strives to put the right athlete in the right environment as often as possible and is designed to be more inclusive and accessible to children from different educational and socio-economic backgrounds".

Our intention in the West Midlands is to help nurture the next generation of international players, providing them with the right support to reach their full potential. Financial grants and support will also be available where needed.

In conjunction, Stourport Hockey Club is also actively working towards England Hockey approval to recognise us as a Talent Centre that provides high quality provision for 12-15 year old players at early talent development level (Talent Foundations). This provision will be open to all players, embedded within the club's junior programme and will recognise the quality of the Club's talent development environment.
