Running had never crossed Helen's mind. Having visited the doctors, Helen noticed a leaflet for a local Couch to 5k programme. On the first session, Helen was very self-conscious and had difficulty completing the one-minute runs, however showed great determination. That first day she started smiling and didn't stop. Upon completing the programme, Helen now runs 3 to 4 times a week. Not only has the programme helped her to lose 3 stone, Helen feels more able to manage her anxiety and has found a group of supportive friends.
Helen said, "I have gone from being very isolated, lonely and unfit to happy, healthy and part of the great running community of Redditch. Who knew that taking that first terrifying step of going to the Couch to 5K would lead me to meeting amazing and supportive people and change my life."
"I am not the person I was in January who used to get up to run in the dark so as not to be seen. I now proudly run in my club top at any time of the day. I don't care who sees me, any negative comments just spur me on to go a little faster or a little further. Running has given me the confidence to start aerobics and Pilates as well, something I have wanted to do for a long time. Running is amazing and I am so glad that I have discovered the joy it brings to my life."
