Please remember that I have Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida is one of the more common disabilities in inclusive sport, however, only 1 in 1000 people will have the condition. There are four types of spina bifida: occulta, closed neural tube defects, meningocele, and myelomeningocele. You don't need to know the different types, all you need to know is regardless of which type someone has it will affect everyone in different ways – so ask them, how does your condition affect you and what do I need to consider?
I enjoy competitive sport, pushing myself to extremes and being challenged physically. However, others might require various adaptations to be able to participate. Understand each participant's motivation to be a part of the session and use appropriate progressions and regressions to accommodate them. However, be flexible in your session design, my pain level may be different one day than it will the next and that might affect my ability to focus or participate. Reassure me and be patient.
No two people with this condition will be the same, so treat everyone individually and make sure to ask them of their ability before assuming their capabilities.
